As the groom’s father, what should I say in my speech?
In general, speeches work best if they are short and sweet, especially if many speeches are expected at the wedding reception or at a pre-wedding party (eg. at the rehearsal dinner). Try to keep all speeches between 3 – 5 minutes in length. Speeches should always be tactful and consider who the guests are. After all, that special story of Johnny and his diaper may not go over so well depending on who’s been invited to the pre-wedding party or wedding reception.
Specifically, as the groom’s father, your speech could include your congratulations to the newlyweds, how happy you are for them, and can include a sentimental moment about your son. Welcome your new daughter-in-law to the family. (e.g. “The day my son told me they were getting married, I knew we were blessed to have Marie as our daughter in law”). You can also welcome her parents into the family as well. (e.g. “Tim and Tina, what a lovely daughter you have and I know where she gets it from. The two of you. It’s my honour to welcome you into our family”).
The best speeches are honest and sincere and spoken from the heart.
